Kissing Clouds...the Mountains of Hatcher's Pass

Alaska is an enchanting wilderness...a painting urging to be painted at every turn.  This last summer, teaching a couple workshops north of Anchorage...was momentus.  Making new friends, meeting by "God'cidence" a cousin of mine (crazy, but true...signed up for my workshop!!!), and a fondness for Alaska that unless you experience first hand is difficult to really express.

This is a common scene, the coulds kissing peaks of mountains at so many turns, one you never tire of.  Shadows moving and painting the peaks...

Gooseberry Falls gouache...

Picked up half-dozen works from my framer today...which here in the north woods of Wisconsin means a near all day affair, four hours driving round trip, and may as well get some grocery shopping in, wood at Home Depot for floating frames, etc.,


I have several works going out to Morningsong Gallery in Carmel By the Sea, California...two gouache and a large acrylic plein air...

This one here I had framed up as a hunch...not heading to a gallery right now anyway, but to see if black matting would set the work off dramatically, and I believe it did.

January Creek... 6"x 4" gouache

Drove home last night past this little scene by the roadside....very pretty with the last light striking the trees behind.  The subtle shadowing of the foreground.  Just knew I had to paint it...

Two works recently given hand made red oak L-Frames...

The painting above work, "Fishing Partners" was a product of impressions and work I did teaching a plein air workshop in the Juneau area of Alaska.  My son, Jason...and I took a car ferry from Juneau to Sitka and back, just for the experience.  Was amazing...and at one point I painted off the back of the ferry.  

These are the Chilkat Mountains in the Gastineau Channel, the oft seen seining fishing boats, and eagles.  Loved the eagles...one spot nearly 1500 of them gathering.  After adding frame, felt the need to push some warms and darks into the painting...(thanks to copal...) and is officially done.  Yeah!!!!  *clapping...

The painting is oil on stretched canvas, then framed with a red oak handmade L-frame I made...

This 12"x 9" is an oil on a black gesso primed stretched canvas.  My curiosity got the best of me, having experimented with gouache on Strathmore #400 series black presentation board, to see what would come painting oils on such a primer.  This work is the result...a plein air in NE Wisconsin...a spot I often bring my area plein air workshop students to...Longslide Falls...and, finished another red oak L-frame for it.  Which I think brings out the warms in the painting nicely...
