Catching up on unfinished projects- Digital painting Howard Johnson, jazz legend

Time to catch up on some projects with the first webinar series completed...one, this digital painting of jazz legend, Howard Johnson...click on both images to see larger, the closeup is unfinished...basically blocked in with some rendering work on the fingers, or roughed in as I might oft say.

Man made objects...such as the tuba...require a more accurate drawing, and patient rendering, even though I want a more spontaneous brushwork when seen up close.  Will post more as this one develops...

This is so "painterly".. I really like it.

Is there an online tutorial for learning digital painting that you could recommend? I've been wanting to learn this kind of a look, more painterly, not the popular anime and slick styles that are most common with digital painting. Thanks in advance for any pointers. :-)

thanks...
sorry, I'm not really aware of any tutorials. None that I've watched or have learned from.

I teach photoshop to high school students as one of my daily visual arts classes, which helps...but, as for painting it is very much my experience painting in general (oils, acrylics, gouache) that I am relying on. There may be faster ways...more efficient ways than how I am proceeding. I don't know.

Basically I squint my eyes and determine a general color as a base to build on. You can see the bass color I chose in the valves for example, a neutral pea green...then I look for other color, see the shape of the color and its value, and put it down. Getting away from the work pulls all the spots together til the eye mixes and sees it as a whole and the illusion of the image.

This is still in many ways, a new medium for myself...having only done a couple digital paintings now.

good luck...
