Floating L-frame..."Long Slide Falls" oil

Framed up the first of three pieces for the Richeson's exhibition.  Not a lot of time, leaving for Alaska in a couple weeks to teach a couple plein air workshops...and a day after return these pieces need to be delivered.  This is 9"x 12"...the dimensions to make the floating gap work inside frame are 12-3/4" x 9-3/4"....

Congratulations on the Wisconsin Plein Air Exhibition. I'm curious how you attached your panel to the floating frame? I'm wanting to build a couple of floating frames.

Thanks

Hi Dan...I use Titebond, though there are any number of good wood glues out there. I sand down an area on the back of my panels, because I seal them initially and want a good bond. Then I cut maple strips at 45 degree angles, the length long enough to screw into from the back "L" portion of the frame, but not so long as to be detectable or seen from the front. A couple hours after gluing to the paint panel, its ready for me to screw in.

Its initially a bit patient work to eyeball its equal space distance, and you have to take care, but once you have it down...its pretty easy.

The frames are good and solid, better than what money will otherwise buy you out there in the frame market.

I will make maple frames as well, paint with black acrylic, then go over with varathane, and then several coats of Mini Wax finishing wax paste... I'll play with some metalic touches on the black too sometime which gives nice variation, and you can tweak it to pull the best out of your work.

HI Larry, Always reading your posts and following your adventures, primarily through IPAP. Love what you are doing with these frames, but it makes me wonder, do you ever sleep?
Also, regarding school & teaching concepts, I also taught my kindergarteners words like 'monochromatic' and 'analagous'-but just one word at a time-and they NEVER forget the teacher who treated them like adults. I know this because they introduce me to their own children, some of them grown. Go for it!

Thanks Kath ....my wife would laugh and suggest I probably have obsessive compulsive disorder. Hahaaa...I just like to think I relish in the uniqueness of life and the cause and effect of opportunity carried out. I just continue to find things ever fascinating....
peace...take care. And...I agree about the young ones. Don't sell them short!
