My Largest Plein Air yet...30"x 48" oil...Mill Pond

Well...finally got the monkey off my back, my nemesis...that is
knowing that Edward Redfield, the Buck County Impressionist and
contemporary of John Singer Sargent's day...used to paint 50"x 56"
size canvases start to finish in one day, or alla prima.

I couldn't figure out how he'd manage...or get such a canvas out
of the field home safely.

But...I set my canvas up...using a Best Delux Lobo easel borrowed
from a friend-

and some mural brushes that really push the paint
around on a large scale...

also knew I would need a larger palette to mix my
paint on, and made this one out of masonite...

finally, one last pic to show me workin', and you get
an idea of the scale of this effort-

Good for you man! I keep telling myself that I need to do some bigger plein airs. Maybe a 24x30.
That is a whopper Larry.
And it looks good to boot.
How far did you have to lug all that stuff from your truck?

thanks everyone...
I was actually able to have my tailgate down on my truck to use to base my operations, right near where I was painting, so this one..Frank, was an ease. Not like some places I paint where I have to pack in.

The Gloucester easel is the easel of ease and choice for many painting large work outdoors. Hoping to get one of those someday, but it seems you are paying more for engineering than materials. Just skinny legs and cross bars it seems and about $300...but, 40"x 50" sized canvases would be no problem!

My goshs, Larry, what a beautiful piece! So, did it take all day to paint? How tired where you when it was all over? Very impressive.

Thanks Michael...

I had a whole other tiredness thing going on...putting 52 more hours than normal at school where I teach, above my regular work week. I am the junior class advisor, and it was prom week. Also the golf coach, thus two golf meets and regular practice, plus three nights in the gym decorating 'till midnight. Prom last night until 2am..

The painting actually was a need for me to get away, experience some sanctuary, was rejuvenating.

Took only 3-1/2 hours, about 1 to 1-1/2 hours more than normal for a much small effort... but then it was run home to get ready for prom night!

thanks, Michael..appreciate the comments and kind regard. peace

Larry

That is so cool Dad, love that pic of you next to the painting, really shows the size. Really, really nice painting . . . the soft subtle colors are really nice. I can't wait until I can get outside and paint again.

This one is really cool! What a great result. Seeing it online is interesting because you can tell that you get more detail in the larger size.

I want to say something witty about the size of the paint box you could use or this is the opposite of guerrilla painting. :^)

Wow it looks great Larry! Its BIG! Way cool, now whats next? ;oD 60" coming up?

Larry Seiler said...

thanks Jason...good to hear, appreciated...

Michelle, thanks

James...it would certainly tax the Boden tripod on a Guerrilla box, wouldn't it! That would be a heck of an endorsement...

Thanks Lori...
I'll stretch another large one, as this was much fun...and will look forward to moving into a new home where I'll have space to store such works until I can find them a home of their own!!! 8^)
