Near 30 Years later...one of my very first Oils...

Came across one of those old mystery wrapped things
you save, put aside and forget. Unwrapped it, and here
was a painting I did about 1978...

Having served in the Navy during the end of the Vietnam
Era, I used the GI Bill and finished college.

I checked out books from the college library, and looked
toward the influences of Rembrandt and Frans Hals...for
some sense of Baroque lighting and drama. This one was
one of Rembrandt's self-portraits...

12"x 12" oil...

After painting about a half-dozen Rembrandt and Hals
works, I then set up a mirror and tried painting myself in
the Baroque style...then an early painting of my first son,
Jason. Where the one of myself is...might be buried in
my art room...and I still have the old one of Jason...but,
how fun near 30 years later to come across something
and see one's early roots.

Wow, that's certainly the next best thing to a time machine. I'd love to see the one of baby Jason..hahaha
I like the palette on this. I could peg it as Rembrandt immediately, just from that. And I love that plein air below!
