Gestural Quickies...Juneau Alaska...

5"x7" oils

Experimenting with some simple color ideas
for mood, and darker simpler suggestions of
trees. Using some plein airs I did this
past summer in Juneau...each effort was done
in about fifteen minutes.

With the idea/concept in mind, premixing the
color...using the largest brush one can use,
these work out with a particular ease and
charm.

Hi Rene...thanks for your comment. Let me try and explain...hhmmm...

Well...I first try and sense a dominant present color, determine if the light should be warm (thus shadows cool), or light cool (shadows warm)...or if I want a palette such as a complementary or split-complementary palette.

I have to factor in how much presence the background deserves, the degree then that halftones in the values will have their presence felt.

I then basically mix up my three or four piles of paint, and then paint very directly.

If I want a reddish undertone for additional affects of luminosity...I'll apply that with turps (lean) and then direct over that. Hope that helps..!!
