11"x 14" oil on panel...set up near home, taking advantage of winter melt off...a late scene, rivers...creeks gorged with water.  A complicated scene, was interesting in the challenge to simplify.  Mixed up a warm neutral to tone the panel...and then mix color into it as a version of pigment soup.

here was my set up...a gorgeous afternoon, saw only one other vehicle...

I really like your color choices on this one, Larry. Beautiful light effects. Did you create the sense of light or was it there, but not captured by the photo? I guess it doesn't really matter (I am just curious)--I really like your interpretation of the scene.

Thanks Meredith...
We are having a very late spring this year...and the greens, the color of spring are very slow to come. Subtle neutrals...and presence of light spoke control to me. Let quieter areas generate the contrast to feel the light.

I've been experimenting with triads of late...some with a sole dominant strong chroma, the other two grayed back. And this one...each color maintained a similar chroma strength...painted into a neutral tone laid down...like a pigment soup Edgar Payne would speak of.

I was painting my impression of what I was seeing...but my choice then of the three triad colors, their values and strength set the guidelines or parameters from start to finish...

Beautiful painting Larry....reminds me of some winter scenes in Pennsylvania. Also, great to see your reference photo - shows how much color gets left out, and why painting on location can't be beat!
