Few Touches...finished, "Spring Comes"...8x10 plein air

Perhaps about ten minutes additional paint time to bring more continuity to what I sensed was a slight busyness in the water, competing with the grasses.  So, quieted the water a tad...heightened the values and edges of the grasses and quite satisfied with the piece now...mirroring the emotion/feelings I held for this isolated scene.  Compare with the post just before this one...

I love all the many colors and the beautiful reflections of the water. A very beautiful picture and wonderful composition.

I love the way this piece shimmers between abstract and realism. I've been watching your work for a long time from the sidelines. An extended artistic block has made me rethink my own direction and have been studying your work closely for inspiration. Any words of advice on overcoming block would be gratefully received.

to be honest, I can't say I have ever experienced a "block"...that is some hindrance affecting my desire to create. If not my painting, I have my music I write and perform.

I think though...one can work their way out of a block by committing to a one hour per day postcard sized painting. One hour is not asking a lot...and you lose yourself in the activity.

I created what I call an "environment box" and somewhere in my blog here I have pictures of its use with explanation. I have two lights that enter the box, hidden from the front. I place objects, mundane...could be a candy wrapper...anything, piece of pie...a cup of coffee, and I adjust the base the object sits on with construction colored paper. I do a simple study, and in fact that is how this blog was originally birthed. Back in 2006...I committed to a daily effort, and the blog helped me log them, talk about them...and you can see them archived here.

Whether one wishes to paint portraits, landscapes, wildlife...the simple postcard sized daily allows you to experiment with color, brushwork, undertones...that you can then utilize in other painting. It may inspire you then to advance yourself in other genres...or, you may find yourself delighting in the simpler mundane every day object. Either way...you'll be painting.

Such a commitment isn't based on feeling like it or not. Its a commitment. If you have a blog...you announce your plan, then begin. Knowing you have your blog to answer to...and folks that begin following, you paint regardless of feeling like it or not. In time though...you will come to feel a sense of emptiness to not be painting.

Hope that offers some useful thoughts...
