Sketch of Riley...

10"x 8" oil w/Zorn palette

Just thought I'd do a small oil sketch of my son Jeremy's
Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Riley...

This process of painting the darks, mids, lights, and lighter
values to suggesting some background took about fifteen
minutes, and is a good exercise in essential brushwork,
gestural attitude and so forth.

I'll be tightening it up...but, just playing a little

This is awesome Dad, and it's cool to see you using the Zorn palette, it's one of my favorites to paint with. Another interesting combo to try is instead of cadmium red, try using alizorin crimson(spell check?). It's just another effect.

I really like the pose of the Riley and his placement within the canvas.
